Are Magnetic Lashes EASY to Apply?
Magnetic eyelashes have been lauded as an ingenious new product that makes wearing falsies super simple. In theory, it's a great idea. Who wouldn't like to be able to just 'press and go' as you head out the door to your dinner date or hop on to a hastily convened Zoom call, achieving stunning lashes in a matter of seconds?
How do magnetic eyelashes work?
Before we weigh up the pros and cons, let's first explain how magnetic lashes work. The immediate difference you'll notice between these and glue-on lashes is that each lash will contain teeny tiny magnets on the lash band. Combined with a liner that contains iron oxide, a bond is formed between the lash band and the liner ensuring the lash stays in place all day long.
On a side note, you could also get the same lash effect with a clear adhesive liner which works like glue should you not want to use iron oxide. This however negates the “magnet” mechanism and works like a standard lash.
By their very nature, magnetic lashes have the benefit of a fuller look. Another big plus, and this is probably the key selling point for a lot of people, is that applying magnetic lashes is very easy. Put them on wrong? Simply pull them off and try again.
And speaking of removing them, magnetic eyelashes do come off incredibly easily. That means you're very unlikely to damage them, so they're highly reusable. However, you may find the liner can sometimes be a bit stubborn to remove. We recommend always using a two phase oil based cleanser and Lancome does a great one called Bi Facil.
Are magnetic eyelashes safe?
Elise Brisco, OD, CCH, integrative optometrist and clinical homeopath, says yes, overall, magnetic lashes are safe to use around the eyes. To be extra safe:
- Read the directions on the package. Whether or not you're a pro at applying false eyelashes, each kit is unique and has its own set of instructions.
- Don't share your eyelashes with friends. "Make sure you keep them clean so you don't give yourself an eye infection," says Dr. Brisco. "Wash your hands before handling anything close to your eyes."
- Remove them before you go to bed. "When you don’t clean your eyelids well, or remove makeup and false eyelashes, you risk getting an eye infection," says Dr. Brisco.
What's the easiest way to apply magnetic eyelashes?
STEP ONE
A key element is to make sure to use enough magnetic eyeliner so that your lashes have enough product to magnetise too. Once you've applied your magnetic eyeliner, let it dry for about 3 minutes, or until the liner is no longer tacky. To do this, I recommend doing the "dry test." This just means that you do a quick touch with your finger to see if any residue comes off. If it feels tacky, or the magnetic eyeliner comes off on your finger, it is not totally dry.
It's important for your eyeliner to be dry before applying your lashes so that the liner does not get onto the magnets on the lash band. It can also make your lashes not stay on for the full 8 hours. And last, it can cut down on the 30 uses you should be able to get out of each set of our award winning Lash Enhancers.
While you wait for your eyeliner to dry, you can apply your mascara. If you want to wear mascara, you need to curl your lashes and apply it first. And yes, it does make a difference. Plus, you absolutely want to avoid getting mascara on your magnetic lashes as that could ruin them permanently. Just put on a generous coat of your favorite mascara before your magnetic lashes. It's as easy as that to start.
STEP TWO
When it comes to attaching your lashes, I found the easiest way to put them on is to hold the corner edge with my fingers and lay them gently against the liner. Then using the Angled Eyelash Brush - press the lash down onto the liner to secure into place. This keeps your fingers clean and ensures the lash snaps to the liner on your eyelid. It's so much safer, and now I'll never go back to using tweezers.
The tiny magnets on the lash band allow the lash to instantly connect to the eyeliner without needing a second magnetic lash to hold them on. It's important to make sure your magnetic lash is hugging your lash line so that your natural and magnetic lash blend nicely together for the ultimate lash-look.
STEP THREE
And, that's it! You can literally wear these magnetic lashes anywhere as they will stay on all day. They stay put on the windiest day and when the sun is scorching hot. Wear them to yoga, to a meeting, date night, wedding or just because you can.
